Free Bobrisky: The Fight for Justice and Equality
We are reaching out to you today with a powerful campaign to support Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, known as Bobrisky, a trailblazing Nigerian social media personality and LGBTQ icon. Bobrisky is currently facing a grave injustice that requires our urgent attention and support.
Bobrisky's journey has been one of courage, resilience, and breaking barriers. As a transgender woman, she has faced discrimination and adversity while standing as a beacon of hope and representation for many in the LGBTQ community. Her presence on social media apps like Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram has not only brought visibility to LGBTQ issues in Nigeria but has also inspired countless others to embrace their true selves.
Despite the tremendous progress Bobrisky has made, Nigeria's anti-LGBTQ laws have posed significant challenges. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Nigeria and can result in up to 14 years of imprisonment. As a prominent figure in the community, Bobrisky has faced constant threats, harassment, and legal persecution.
In early April 2024, Bobrisky was arrested and later sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine for allegedly defacing naira banknotes. The charges stemmed from social media videos that showed her celebrating at a film premiere. In a climate of fear and intimidation, Bobrisky was pressured to plead guilty to avoid facing more severe charges. This is a clear example of how Nigeria's anti-LGBTQ laws and social climate have been weaponized against her.
Unfortunately, Nigerian prisons have a troubling record of mistreatment towards LGBTQ people, including excessive cases of rape and abuse. Bobrisky's lawyers have expressed concerns for her mental state and well-being, indicating she is contemplating suicide due to the harsh conditions she is facing. Her mental health is in jeopardy as she struggles with depression in this hostile environment.
We are calling upon you, the global community, to stand with us in support of Bobrisky's right to justice and equality. Our goals are twofold:
1. Raise Funds for Legal Support: We need to secure the best legal team for Bobrisky's appeal. Your generous contribution will help us provide her with the resources needed to fight for her freedom and challenge this unjust conviction.
2. Lobby for Bobrisky's Release: We urge the US government to put pressure on the Nigerian government to release Bobrisky. Your support will amplify our call for justice and draw international attention to this issue.
Let's stand together to demand justice for Bobrisky and protect her right to live freely and authentically. Your donation and support can make a difference in her life and the lives of many others facing similar struggles.
Together, we can be a force for change. Let's Free Bobrisky!
Thank you for your support and compassion.

“A Brief history of Bobrisky”

Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, known predominantly as Bobrisky, is a Nigerian social media personality and transgender woman born on August 31, 1991. She has made a name for herself as a prominent figure on social media platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram, where she is known for her bold presence and unapologetic expression of her identity. Bobrisky went viral on TikTok in 2021 for creating the "bobrisky" dance.

Bobrisky's early life includes attending King's High School and Okota High School for her secondary education. She graduated with a BSc degree in accounting from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Her journey into the spotlight began when she challenged Nigeria's conservative standards with her open identity as a transgender woman.

Her rise to fame has been marked by controversy and influence. She gained recognition for her unapologetic approach to gender identity and her bold, flamboyant style. Despite facing significant backlash from conservative elements in Nigerian society, she has amassed a substantial following and has been invited to speak at various events.

Bobrisky has been vocal about supporting other individuals within the LGBTQ community, though she has faced her own share of controversies with peers. Nonetheless, she has remained resilient in the face of challenges.

Bobrisky's most recent controversy involves her arrest and conviction in early April 2024 for allegedly defacing naira banknotes. The charges stemmed from social media videos that appeared to show her throwing money in the air at a film premiere. She was pressured into pleading guilty to avoid facing more severe charges, a clear example of the legal challenges she faces due to Nigeria's anti-LGBTQ laws.

Currently, she is serving a six-month prison sentence without the option of a fine at the Ikoyi correctional center in Lagos. Bobrisky's case is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQ community in Nigeria and the need for change and justice.
